The news from the Samantha Ferris chat today, as gathered by shoiryu, is, and I quote, "in regard to fanfic: the SPN cast and crew read everything. Everything. Be afraid."

To wit: She tried to tell Jensen about Dean/Ellen, aaaand he already knew. And was AMUSED.

Ummm. Ummm. So I'm kind of bright red just THINKING about, you know, everything out there. I'm torn between being super duper amused or kinda horrified AHAHA.

(Skfjdfdl the WORST OF IT is that I was totally set to write this RPF porning AND NOW I JUST. CAN'T. Alkajsdlfj oh God.)

I think they alluded to this at one other point and it made me *facepalm* then, but it's SO FUNNY. And embarassing. I bet they mock the shit out it. BUT IT'S WHY WE LOVE THEIR SHOW. They know what to put in the scripts.

Here's an interesting thing, though. Joe M who writes for Stargate: Atlantis says no one with SGA reads the fanfic stuff for legal reasons. I have to wonder a) if it's true (as in people do but he has to say they don't), b) a "cop-out", or c) Kripke and crew are breaking a bunch of rules.

You know, I have no idea why, but I almost HOPE they do! Fandom is not SRS BUSINESS, it's, you know. Ridiculous and fun and not meant to be taken TOO seriously, at least. Heh.

Huh! I would have thought it would have been the other way around, fanficers unable to write because of the copyright on the show/network/etc. Honestly, I can't see EVERY SINGLE crew member bent over the laptop at every moment of the day, but maybe every now and again they check the CW boards, and maybe even check LJ out a little. I'm thinkin' Jared might get the biggest kick out of everyone. :D

I think the "legal reasons" for no one reading the fanfiction would be that, if we knew they read it and one of the episodes follows a storyline similar to what someone wrote in a story already, they could, in theory, sue the show for having "stolen" their idea/plot from their fanfiction. Kind of petty, but we do live in a fairly litigious society.

I really hope nothing like that ever happens with SPN, because it would be fairly ridiculous (and honestly, with the sheer volume of fanfiction out there, it would be hard sometimes to not do a story that someone else has already done, right?) and also because that would make whoever actually decided to sue THE LAMEST LAMO THAT EVER DID LAME.
