Jun. 8th, 2009 06:51 pmToday has been exactly one year since I moved out of my home. It's been... a learning experience. I can't even reread the entries I made around this time last year because I get this overwhelming phantom homesickness that makes me feel like I'm doing it all over again because apparently I've got eidetic memory when it comes to some things. I'm so glad I never have to go through the first move away from home again. So glad.
My dad informed me today that he has the official word that he'll be laid off from his job in October. And that's just... awesome. The pros to this situation is that he's already retired, 55 and already done his 30 years, and this job is really just a way to earn more money. But it's a long drive and he kind of hates it, so. But still. Money. Economy. Just awesome.
I had my first undertow at work a few days ago and now I think I'm addicted. I'd seen them made before, but never had one. Basically mine was a half a pump of caramel, an inch of cold soy milk, and then you pull two shots of espresso into the cup. Instead of letting it fall right in, you hold a spoon under the espresso so when it falls into the cup, the espresso actually sits on top of the milk, forming a perfect double layer in the cup. The layering actually stays intact when you drink it and it's pretty much extremely awesome. This is yet another example of Starbucks = Stockholm Syndrome. :(
This Saturday my family who currently lives in Hong Kong is coming to town, so we're all getting together for a chili cookoff (and maybe my dad's peach cobbler to boot) so I'm really looking forward to that. The weekend after that my sister and I are driving down to Key Largo to spend the weekend and I absolutely cannot wait. Mostly I'm excited so I can stop feeling so freaking miserable.
ETA: Okay, maybe not SO miserable:

HOW MUCH OF A DORK IS HE IN HIS LITTLE SWEATER. Thank God for golf charities, apparently.

Date: 2009-06-09 12:02 am (UTC)I do not understand this layered thing. Why do I want to drink espresso that isn't mixed with anything? Explain more!

Date: 2009-06-09 12:10 am (UTC)*Authoritative barista voice* WELL! When you first sip it, you just taste the dark, bitter, caramelly espresso (which, granted, some people don't like; it's an acquired taste, I guess, to just like espresso without anything cutting it). But when you tip the cup further you taste the cold sweet milk and the warm bitter espresso all in go and it all still stays LAYERED! Somehow this is very exciting to me, but it srsly just tastes so good. If you're on good terms with your regular baristas, ask them to make you one. Some of them might not even know what it is though, haha. It's kind of only something the prissy, picky Starbucks partners would order.

Family from H.K. That's exciting. I'm sure they'll have a lot of stories about their home.

Date: 2009-06-09 11:21 pm (UTC)Yes! I was hoping to go visit them in Hong Kong next year before they come back home officially. Ugh, that would just be the GREATEST.

Date: 2009-06-09 06:52 am (UTC)And um, that drink sounds awesome...is it kind of a special employee thing or can I ask someone to make it for me here? lol.

Date: 2009-06-09 11:34 pm (UTC)Heh, weeell... it's kind of more of a special employee thing? I hadn't even heard of it until a couple months ago and I've been with the company for over two and a half years. BUT if you're on good terms with the baristas or are just really nice in asking, you can probably fandangle your way into getting one!
