My family and I stayed with some friends of the family in Hiawassee, Georgia (which is so far north it's practically North Carolina) and it was as relaxing and delightful as I'd hoped it would be. We hiked through the mountains on the Appalachian Trail some, even stopped at an outpost where the hikers come through to stock up, sleep, take showers, etc. It's all very fascinating to me, to be honest. We passed one guy who was talking to another guy, who said it was five months to the day since he started hiking the Appalachian. It starts in Maine and ends about thirty miles south from the outpost where we were, and I thought to myself, my God, wouldn't that be the coolest thing ever, to say you've hiked the entire Appalachian trail? My dad did pretty good chunks, backpacking on it when he was younger, and he's always promised to take my sister and me on a two/three day hike. So yeah! Maybe that'll be next on my list of Things To Accomplish.

Lake Chatuge, and Lake Chatuge dam in North Carolina.

This is at that Appalachian trail outpost. And that's clouds, not fog. Made for the perfect atmosphere for a hike.

A tradition, I guess, of throwing one's old hiking boots into the tree when they were too old to be useful anymore.

And here we see a rare [livejournal.com profile] caithream sneaking off back into the woods...

A lovely vineyard we stopped at to sample some wine. So so pretty.

Calvin.

And Hobbs. :D

The "neighborhood" of the people who we stayed with.

Sunset from the back porch. That tiny speck coming from the tallest peak is called Brasstown Bald.

The lovely cabin we stayed in.

So, yeah. Not exactly thrilled to be back in Florida.

In case you didn't see me shrieking about it on twitter, THE TRON SOUNDTRACK LEAKED. Unghhh, it's so good. ELECTRIC LOVE.

I would say I'm completely bummed to be going back to work, but I've just got three weeks to get through and then I have two whole weeks off - the rest of the year. +1 points for working for an attorney, I guess!

GORGEOUS pics!!

Have you read Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson? It's my fave book about walking the Appalachian Trail.

Ooh, I have not! Seeing as how Literature of the South was, bar none, my favorite class in college, I'll definitely have to check that out. Thanks, darlin'! <3

Wow. Those are beautiful pictures!

I'm amazing by the guy who is doing a walkabout on the trails. That would be quite the adventure...

Thank you! And me too! Hundreds of people do it every year, usually taking them around 6 months or so, which is just astounding! What an awesome way to discover yourself.

Amazing pictures! Wow! Hard to imagine that places like that still exist in the US. Glad you had such a nice time, hon!

Hee, thanks! And I know right? They're quite out of the way, but so awesome once you find them. :D

Agreed! When I (finally) want to settle down for good, I think this is the area that I want to do it in.

Fabulous pics. HOMG i wish there were places like that near me. Phenomenal. Though, I know, not exactly near Florida either. :(

But yay for holidays?!

[identity profile] caithream.livejournal.com 2010-12-01 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
We should move there TOGETHAR! Hee. Or better yet, you come explore my part of the world, and I'll come explore yours! Win-win, I'd say!

DEFINITE yay! And yay for getting the opportunity to stuff my face, too, haha!

Thanks! It was loooovely. The south (or, my northern version of the south) is definitely where I think I'd want to spend the rest of my days, once I decide to settle.
